Anicet Ekane, the prominent left-wing Cameroonian opposition figure, has tragically expired while held in state custodial confinement, a mere five weeks following his initial apprehension. This somber announcement was jointly delivered by his legal representatives and his political organization.
Mr. Ekane, who was seventy-four years of age, was numbered among the principal leaders of a coalition of opposition parties that collectively endorsed the candidacy of Issa Tchiroma Bakary in the presidential electoral contest held in October.
Mr. Tchiroma Bakary asserts his conviction that he was the legitimate and rightful victor of the nationwide ballot, which was officially declared as having been won by the ninety-two-year-old incumbent Head of State, Paul Biya. Subsequent to these events, Mr. Tchiroma Bakary has since sought refuge in the West African nation of The Gambia.
No official determination of the cause of Mr. Ekane’s death has yet been publicly disseminated. His affiliated political party has leveled accusations against the governmental authorities, alleging that they denied him essential access to his prescribed medical treatments—a serious charge which the government has, in turn, vehemently repudiated.
According to statements provided by a designated spokesman for Mr. Ekane's political entity, the African Movement for New Independence and Democracy (Manidem) party, Mr. Ekane passed away on Monday morning within the confines of a military medical facility, subsequent to a marked deterioration in his health condition over the preceding weekend.
"We have received no definitive clarification regarding the circumstances... His spouse had been summoned to attend the location and, upon her arrival, she was merely presented with the lifeless physical remains of her husband," the spokesman communicated.
He further elaborated that the grieving family subsequently transported the deceased’s remains to the public mortuary.
Captain Cyrille Serge Atonfack, the official spokesman for the Ministry of Defense, stated that the leader of the Manidem party had succumbed to a predetermined illness, but he refrained from providing any additional granular details.
"The deceased, who was afflicted by various chronic pathological conditions, had been formally interned at the Military Medical Centre of the National Gendarmerie," he affirmed, further insisting that the politician had been afforded exemplary care and attention by the attending physicians since his arrest on the twenty-fourth of October.
René Emmanuel Sadi, the Minister of Communication and official governmental spokesperson, subsequently conveyed the sincere condolences of the government to the surviving family members of Mr. Ekane, as well as to the Manidem political organization.

According to the official statements provided by Mr. Ekane's legal representatives, he had been formally accused of hostility against the sovereign state, incitement to public revolt, and issuing calls for insurrection.
"He was never presented before a judge nor formally charged with any specific misdemeanor," declared one of his legal counsels, Hippolyte Meli, in a statement published on social media, further characterizing the detention of the Manidem party leader as "patently illegal."
In recent weeks, unconfirmed rumours had circulated that the prominent opposition personality had indeed died, prompting members of Mr. Ekane's party to issue public demands to see him "dead or alive."
His sudden death has transmitted waves of profound shock across the entire nation, resulting in supporters gathering at the party's central headquarters in the city of Douala to collectively mourn the loss. Others have resorted to venting their profound displeasure and anger through various online platforms.
The Manidem party has subsequently reported that its premises have been surrounded by armed security forces.
Mr. Ekane had initially proffered his endorsement for another vigorous opposition figure, Maurice Kamto, during the presidential electoral cycle. However, Mr. Kamto, who had previously endured a protracted period of detention after officially disputing the results of the preceding election in 2018, had his current candidacy outright rejected by both the electoral commission, Elecam, and the Constitutional Council, on the basis that his party had formally endorsed more than one candidate.
